Ricky Harpole column

It sometimes seems, in my line of perfidy, that life is a game of “hurry up and wait.”
We cranked off a show with a story line last week using a borrowed movie crew and live recording (during which proceedings sobriety was not a requirement). We shot it live at Alvin’s Music Palace.
It was my guess that most of the crew and extras would have a copy of the script. Fortunately for reasons of quality, the directors and producers of this marvel of preserved entertainment decided to put on the show and then write the damned script. Sort of a production built backwards.
This is the type of stuff that keeps Nashville, Hollywood and Whitfield in operation. Of the three afore mentioned I think Whitfield will be the next stop if we ever take the show on the road. If you want to see what a wreck we can make of a live show and eat some first class barbecue on a Sunday afternoon and save a few starving artists, crank up and ease on down to “Alvin’s” after church and don’t worry about having to cook for yourself or any sinners who might show up at your Sunday dinner table.
We’ll take care of that bunch and provide entertainment while you listen to the blues and folk music live, and run your enjoyment and cholesterol factor offline. The crowd at events of this nature are welcomed to sing along and otherwise participate in the show. Bring the young’uns if you got ‘em. Bring the pets if they’re stage broken.
We’ll be on stage from 4 – 8 p.m. That way the bread winners will be rested enough to return to the rat race on Monday and the young’uns will be good for school. Alvin’s is located between Oakland and Charleston on Hwy. 32 about halfway on the north side of the road. We sometimes inaugurate homegrown gospel into the show.
Any local artists are welcome to audition. If they bring their own booze (and us some too) we will give them a discount on their entry fee (just kidding).
This is designed to be live karaoke. Bring your keyboard, guitar, Jamaican kettle drum and “strut yo’ stuff.”
Tis the season for outdoor events.
