Lady Wave lose halftime lead and game to Kirk

The North Delta Lady Green Wave felt confident heading into the locker room with a 23-14 halftime lead over No. 4 Kirk in their District 1-AA contest Tuesday night.

That was until Carmen Woods took over.

The senior guard poured in 24 of her game-high 30 points in the second half as the Raiderette defense held North Delta to 10 points in the final 16 minutes on their way to a 44-33 victory.

Kirk improved to 12-2 on the season while North Delta fell to 1-1 in district play and 9-6 overall.
Hanna Greenlee led North Delta with 15 points while Bradi Beard followed with 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Laci DuBravec’s three-pointer helped ignite a North Delta 9-0 run in the first quarter after Kirk had jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game. Beard’s steal and layup to start the second quarter pushed the lead to 13-7.

Greenlee added consecutive baskets  later on in the period to increase the Green Wave lead to 19-12 with 2:45 remaining  in the half.

Kirk began to chip away at the North Delta lead in the third quarter as Woods connected on four straight free throws  to cut the margin to 25-20. Woods later nailed the first of four three-pointers to give the Raiderettes a 29-28 lead with 2:10 remaining in the period.

Woods would continue her assault with a trey and a pair of free throws at the 5:18 mark of the fourth quarter to give Kirk a 35-28 advantage.

A pair of field goals by Beard and Greenlee and one free throw by Katelyn Still was all North Delta could muster in the second half as the Wave was held to 29 percent shooting on the night.

DuBravec added five points, four rebounds and three assists while Still finished with three points, five steals, four assists to go along with four rebounds.

Varsity Boys

In boys varsity play, Sayle Roberts scored 15 points as Kirk broke open a close 21-15 lead at halftime in route to a 49-23 victory over the Green Wave.

North Delta (0-5; 0-2) took a 10-8 lead as Hunt Howell scored seven of his team-high 13 points in the first quarter.

Kirk (4-3) took the lead for good at 17-10 by going on a 9-0 run in the second quarter. Reid Walker drained a three-pointer while Payton Box added a jumper to fuel the rally.

The second half was all Kirk as the Raiders outscored North Delta 26-8 as Roberts and Drew Tillman added six points each.

Colby Pirtle followed Howell with six points while Tyler Beard and Renic Greenlee each registered two points each.

Jr. High

Kirk made it a clean sweep on the night by taking a pair of close junior high contests.

In the junor high girls matchup, the Raideretts took a 26-25 victory over North Delta. Shelby Province led the Lady Wave with nine points while Janie Brasell and Anna Lloyd followed with seven and six points each. Ginger Stevens added two points and Sarah Johnson chipped in with one point.

The Raiders also took an exciting 47-44 win over the North Delta boys despite a game-high 20 points from Ridge Simmerman.

Bailey Sullivant’s three point play gave the Green Wave a 44-43 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the game, but Kirk answered with a layup and a steal at the buzzer to salvage the victory.

Will Hartzell added 12 points while Sullivant registered six points. Wilson Morrow and Will Kidder each had three points.

North Delta will travel to Indianola tonight for five games starting at 3:30 before hosting Oak Hill in six games tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
