John “Jack” Marvin Crothers

LAMBERT– John “Jack” Marvin Crothers, 79, died Wednesday, August 4, 2010. He was a retired Mississippi Chemical Corporation field representative who worked in Panola County.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lambert. Rev. Don O’Quin and Dr. Laurie Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Lambert Cemetery. Kimbro Funeral Home has charge.

Carothers, born March 30, 1931, in Lambert, was a graduate of Mississippi State University and a member of the First Baptist Church in Lambert. He was a Rotary club member and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include: his wife, Phyllis Manning Crothers of Lambert; one step-son, Randy Craig of Southaven; one step-daughter, Leslie Hyman of Olive Branch; one brother, Philip Crothers of Vidalia, La. and four step-grandchildren.

David Lewis “Doc” Sanford

POPE- David Lewis “Doc” Sanford, 55, died Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Springhill Pope M.B. Church. Pastor Willie Forest will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary and Saturday from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. at Springhill Pope M.B. Church.

Sanford, born August 25, 1954, in Courtland, to the late Jessie James Sanford and Nona Myrtle Strong Sanford, was a bus driver for South Panola School District. He was a construction worker and a member of Springhill Pope M.B. Church.

Survivors include: five daughters, Carrol Barber of Meridian, Sharron Hentz, Ledia Robinson and Loutasha Johnson, all of Courtland and Lakessa Burton of Batesville; six sons, David Rudd, Derrick Sanford and William Rudd, all of Pope, Anthony Rudd of Sardis, Undrier Robinson and Nikia Robinson, both of Batesville; three sisters, Mary Pearl Jones and Deloise Sanford, both of Courtland and Elaine Burgess of Batesville; five brothers, James Sanford, Bobby Sanford, Jerry Wayne Sanford, Rickey Sanford and Jeffrey Sanford, all of Courtland; 26 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

William D. Vernon Sr.

COMO– William Donald “Catfish” Vernon Sr., 80, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at Golden Living Nursing Home in Southaven.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Dr. James Pinkerton will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery-Midtown in Memphis. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday prior to the service. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Vernon, born June 30, 1930, in Memphis, to the late William C. and Lula Parham Vernon, graduated from Southside High School and worked 35 years for Frito Lay in Memphis. He attended Harmontown Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Donnie Vernon and Terry Vernon, both of Harmontown; one daughter, Chris Vernon Maglior; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Maxwell James “Buddy” Wood

BELEN– Maxwell James “Buddy” Wood, 86, died Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Quitman County Hospital. He was the brother of Lucille Woods of Batesville.

Services were Sunday at Belen Baptist Church. Burial was in Belen Cemetery. Rev. M.C. Johnson and Rev. Ricky Redd officiated. Kimbro Funeral Home had charge.

Wood, born Dec. 24, 1923, was a veteran serving 10 1/2 years in the U.S. Navy, serving  during WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of Belen Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He coached little league baseball for many years, was a caretaker for Belen Cemetery and served as board member for Belen Water Association and Bigfield Water Association.

Survivors along with his sister include: his wife, Alice S. Wood of Belen; one daughter, Wanda Bouchillon of Marks; one son, Frank Mangialardi of Skeen; one sister, Dorothy Brown of Tennessee; one brother, Rodney Wood of Centreville; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Belen Baptist Church or the Belen Cemetery Fund.

 

Anna J. Woods

HORN LAKE– Anna J. Woods, 62, died Monday, August 2, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto. She was the sister of Coach Ricky Woods of Senatobia, formerly of Batesville.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lake Forest Baptist Church in Walls. Rev. Larry Sykes will officiate. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Woods, born July 3, 1948, in Choctaw County, to the late Murry and Jean Steadman Whitman Woods, was a member of Forest Baptist Church and worked for Desoto County Schools in the transportation department.

Survivors along with her brother include: one son, Robby Autry of Walls; two daughters, Rhonda Fiorito of Walls and Kimberly Welzbacher of Germantown, Tenn.; her mother, Nell Woods of Ackerman; two sisters, Tammy McClure of Southaven and Gail Rowland of Lake Cormorant; two brothers, Jackie Woods and Hamp Woods, both of Ackerman; two step-brothers, Brian Whitman of Horn Lake and Jeff Whitman of Toledo, Ohio and six grandchildren.
