Shirley J. Davis
SARDIS— Shirley J. Davis, 67, died Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto.
Services were Saturday at Sardis Lake Baptist Church. Rev. Kevin Crofford officiated. Burial was in Morris Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Sommerville, Tenn.
Davis, born April 26, 1942, in Fayette County, Tenn., to the late John and Euphie Mae Houston Gammel, was a member of Sardis Lake Baptist Church and a retired office manager.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Louis Byrd and P.O. Davis and a grandson, Ricky Tacker Jr.
Survivors include: two daughters, Borgia Jean Byrd Crofford and Joannie Renay Byrd Tacker, both of Sardis; one sister, Ava Hazel Gammel Watkins of Sommerville, Tenn.; one brother, Gene Gammel of Memphis; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
CHARLESTON— Mattie Brewer Wood Legge, 89, died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Tallahatchie County Nursing Home.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. Wells Funeral Home. Hal Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Legge was born Dec. 6, 1920, to Ben and May Prysock Wood in Washington County.
Survivors include: one granddaughter, Linette Brewer Walters of Senatobia; and two grandsons, James C. Brewer of Batesville and Robert B. Brewer of Seattle, Wash. and five great-grandchildren.
David Randall Leslie
OAKLAND— David Randall Leslie, 44, died Friday, April 2, 2010, at his residence.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. Shackelford Funeral Directors in Bolivar. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery at Hickory Valley.
A native of Coos Bay, Ore., he was born April 10, 1965, the son of the late William “Bud” and Doris Irwin Leslie. He spent his childhood in Hardeman County before spending 12 years in Memphis. He lived in Mississippi the past 10-12 years working as a cabinet maker for Panola County residents.
He leaves a daughter, Tonya Bishop and a son, Keith Leslie, both of Oxford; three brothers, Ray Leslie and Wiley “Skip” Ward, both of Oakland, and Butch Ward of Middleton; four sisters, Ann Bell of Olive Branch, Susie Harvell of Resaca, Ga, Evelyn Gravitt of Sugar Valley, Ga. and Rachel Ward of Eugene, Ore, and six grandchildren.
Hugh E. Linder
BATESVILLE— Hugh E. Linder, 82, died Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Services were Saturday at First Baptist Church in Batesville. Dr. Robert “Bob” Self and Dr. P.J. Scott officiated. Wells Funeral Home had charge. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park.
Linder, born August 2, 1972, in Spartanburg, S.C. to the late Milton Lee and Vinnie Lowe Linder, was the owner of Dees Store and served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Louvene Dees Linder of Batesville; one daughter, Jan Linder Roberts and her husband, Bob of Cleveland; two sons, David Linder and his wife, Cheryl Kay of Meridian and Dr. Lee Linder and his wife, Stacy Jo of Batesville; one sister, Margaret Linder Campbell of Atlanta and seven grandchildren.
COURTLAND— Mary Jane Davis McGregory, 59, died Thursday, April 1, 2010, at Cancer Treatments Centers of America in Zion, Ill. She was the wife of Steve McGregory.
Services were Monday. Rev. Tim Ellis, Rev. Jimmy Hood, Rev. John Davis and Rev. Dick Hill officiated. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
McGregory was born Oct. 11, 1950, in Marks, to William A. Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla. and the late Margie L. Blaker Gant.
She worked for Parker Hanafin and a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Jeanette Green Harrison and one brother, James Green.
Survivors along with her father and husband include: two daughters, Deletha McGregory Aldridge and her husband, Scotty of Batesville and Delisa McGregory Brown and her husband, Dennis of Batesville; two sons, David McGregory and his wife, Susie and Danny McGregory and his wife, Melony of Batesville; five sisters, Shelby Jean Green Price of Millport, Ala., Betty Sue Davis Tutor of Batesville, Bonnie Fay Davis Bailey of Enid, Connie Davis Lambert of Melborne, Fla and Jenice Gant Baxley of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; one brother, William A. “Bill” Davis Jr. of Batesville and 12 grandchildren, Tyler, Christopher, Dan, Mitch and Myles McGregory, Lilly Calicchio, Bailey and Steven Aldridge, Jessi, Tate, Landon and Mary Julia Brown.
Helen Louise Gurley Martindale
COURTLAND— Helen Louise Gurley Martindale, 73, died Friday, April 2, 2010, at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis.
Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Clay Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Martindale, born July 8, 1936, in Cleveland, Tenn., to the late Elzie and Viola Standridge Gurley, was a homemaker and a member of Pope Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Thomas L. Martindale of Courtland; one son, Randall L. Martindale of Courtland; two sisters, Martha Gurley Morris of Atlanta, Ga. and Marie Gurley Orr of Cleveland, Tenn. and two grandsons, Chris and Cliff Martindale.
Frances Jean Onkst Milam
COURTLAND—Frances Jean Onkst Milam, 80, died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
Services will be held Thursday at Wells Funeral Home. Dr. Gary Berry and Rev. Roger Richards officiated. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park.
Milam, born Dec. 23, 1929, in Batesville, to the late Robert Monroe and Nora Catherine Eubanks Onks, was a homemaker and a member of Pope Baptist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, R.L. Milam of Courtland; one daughter, Janice Milam Mangimelli of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Dave Milam of Birmingham, Ala.; two sisters, Barbara Onkst McCarley of Batesville and Charlie Ruth Onkst Cole of Oxford; one brother, James Robert Onskt of Huntsville, Ala.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Chester “Tap” Warren Tapper
BATESVILLE— Chester “Tap” Warren Tapper, 89, died Thursday, April 1, 2010. at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Services were Saturday at Wells Funeral Home. Hal Johnson and Will Anderson officiated. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
Tapper, born Feb. 28, 1921, in Pope, to Willie and Sally Cosby Tapper, was retired from the Mississippi Department of Transportation. He was a member of Courtland Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Margie Bolton Tapper.
Survivors include: one son, Chester Wayne Tapper of Pope; one brother, Elwood Tapper of Southaven; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Chapel Hill Cemetery Fund.
Catherine Wilkins Vawter
COMO— Catherine Wilkins Vawter, 85, died Friday, April 2, 2010, at Allenbrooke Nursing Home in Memphis.
Services were Monday at Harmontown Baptist Church. Burial was in the Harmontown Cemetery near Como. Rev. Jim Pinkerton officiated. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.
Vawter, born Dec. 24, 1924, was a bookkeeper for Mack Trucks and a clerk at Wal-Mart.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Vawter.
Survivors include: one son, Danny Vawter of Collierville, Tenn.; one sister, Martha Reed of Batesville and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Harmontown Baptist Church in Como.
GRENADA—James A. White Sr., 72, died Friday, April 2, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Services were Monday at Crowder Baptist Church. Rev. Truman Scarborough officiated. Burial was in Crowder Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.
White, born May 16, 1937, in Lambert, to Francis Willard and Ruby Estelle Arendale White, retired from General Motors Company after 18 years of service and then went on to work as the chief engineer on the riverboat for 16 years. He attended Friendship East Baptist Church in Teasdale.
He was preceded in death by his wife Annie Ruth Gray White and daughter Lori Ann White Self.
Survivors include: three sons, James A. White Jr. of Hernando; Willard David White and Michael E. White, both of Oxford; one daughter, Kathy White Wilkinson of Grenada; four sisters, Margie Tutor of Courtland, Linda Elmore of Crowder, Nancy White of Oxford; one brother, Dennis Ray White of Jasper, Ala. and 12 grandchildren.
