Errors continued to haunt the Lady Tigers as they dropped to the Desoto Central Lady Jaguars 10-0 Thursday at home.

Then the team traveled to Clarkdale near Meridian to play in the spring fling and lost all four games.

The Lady Jaguars scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the second to go ahead 5-0..

The Lady Tigers gave up another run to the Lady Jaguars to start the fourth inning of play.

Third baseman Meri Morgan Fortune peppered one to the shortstop getting a single for the Lady Tigers. Courtesy runner Olivia Taylor came in and stole second while first baseman Lauren Calvert was at the plate. Calvert walked. Right fielder Meredith Roberson was at the plate and Taylor was thrown out trying to steal third. Roberson later drew a walk, advancing Calvert to second. Paige Jordan, left fielder, singled to load the bases. Pinch runner Diamond Browning, with a full count, flied out to center field. Catcher Victoria Alford grounded out to second leaving the Lady Tigers scoreless.

The Lady Jaguars added another run in top of fifth to push the score to 7-0.

The opposing Jaguars scored three runs in top of the sixth.

The Lady Tigers saw the game come to an end after a hitless bottom of the sixth inning and the 10-run mercy rule.

“I’d like to compliment Desoto Central on their offense,” Lady Tiger head coach Ashleigh Hicks said.  “They hit the ball very well. We can hit the ball and play just as good but we just got to show up. We are setting goals to reach for every game, one step at a time.”

The Lady Tigers recorded seven hits and seven errors. The Lady Jaguars also had seven hits and zero errors.

The junior varsity Lady Tigers lost 5-1.

Tournament

It may look like the South Panola Lady Tigers did not have a good weekend as they returned home from the Clarkdale Tournament in Meridian winless after playing in four games but according to Head Coach Ashleigh Hicks, the record did not justify the steps the Lady Tigers made.

“As a young team we did many things right and took steps we needed to. This team has a bright future in store for them.”

Twenty eight teams participated in the Spring Fling’s 14th year at Northeast Park that included teams from Mississippi and one from Alabama.

On Friday the Lady Tigers took on state-ranked No. 9 Poplarville losing 4-2. Scoring runs were Paige Jordan and Lindsey Calvert.

The Lady Tigers were shutout by Vancleave 8-0 for the second game Friday.

In the first game on Saturday, they lost to Harrison Central 5-4. Amanda Ivy, Chelsea Allen, Meredith Roberson and Meri Morgan Fortune all scored runs for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers played 2nd ranked Madison Central for the last game on Saturday losing 5-0.

“Madison Central is ranked No. 2 and we held them to 1-0 for five innings and then 2-0 until the sixth inning.”

Seventh grader Nicole Fullilove pitched all games except the first inning in the Vancleave game.

“She really stepped up this weekend pitching awesome for a seventh grader.”

Hicks made many changes in her lineup for the weekend. Some of those changes included Madison Taylor at right field, Meredith Roberson at shortstop and Amanda Ivy catching.

“It may have stirred a fire in some of them,” said Hicks to losing all four games. “They held their heads up high. I told them they took major steps and let’s keep moving forward.”

The Lady Tigers return to action for three straight days of non-conference action. Thursday, they host Horn Lake at 5 and 6 p.m. Friday, the Lady Tigers will travel to Charleston for a junior varsity game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the varsity team will participate in the Grenada tournament starting at 11 a.m.
