The Mississippi State Department of Health on Friday, October 17 issued a boil water notice for customers who receive their drinking water from the Hotophia Water Association.
The Hotophia Water Association serves approximately 2,200 customers east of Batesville in Panola County.
Water sampling showed the presence of total coliform bacteria in a preponderance of samples, according to the Health Department’s announcement.
Health officials strongly recommend that all water be boiled vigorously for one minute before it is consumed. The precaution should last for at least two days. Water system officials will be immediately notified when the boil water alert is lifted, the Health Department stated.
Officials advise against drinking the water or using the water to make drinks without boiling it first.
Dish washing water should be boiled. Fruits and vegetables should be washed with boiled water as well, according to the Health Department’s announcement. Washing hands and bathing with unboiled water is safe if no water is swallowed. Teeth should be brushed with boiled water. Food may be cooked with unboiled water if it will be boiled at least one minute during the cooking process.
