Karate team successful

Members of Grantham’s Martial Arts Academy and Quitman County Martial Arts recently received trophies at the Electric Showdown 07 Karate Tournament held in Greenwood.

There were approximately 175 competitors competing for trophies in weapons, kata and sparring. This was the first tournament of the fall series sponsored by Southern Martial Arts.

Trophy winners from Quitman County Martial arts include:

Michael Cook, second in competition; Lacambris Webb, first in sparring, third in kata, Dawayne Lloyd Jr., first in sparring, third in kata; Kalvin Flowers, second in sparring, third in kata; Antonio Hoskins Jr., first in sparring, third in forms; Russell Furr Jr., first in parring, third in kata; and Jawon Allen, third in sparring, third in kata.

In July, Robert Raymond and Michael Cook successfully passed all requirements for their first degree black belt. Raymond is an assistant instructor for Grantham’s Martial Arts Academy and Cook is an assistant instructor for Quitman County Martial Arts.

Other students recently testing for their colored belts were: Lloyd Jr., Flowers, Webb, Hoskins, all green belt; Furr and Allen, both gold belt.
